A wounded cavalry officer, a Black nurse, and a sharp-witted horse caught between hatred, justice, and a fragile new peace after the Civil War.
In the ruins of war-torn America, Lieutenant Lance Jacobs returns from the battlefield missing a leg but not his sense of duty. When he falls in love with Emma Watson, a Black nurse who once saved his life, their forbidden relationship collides with rising racism, masked riders, and the ghosts of the past – all watched by Light, the horse who sees more than any human.
“A Western of love and conscience – where even the horse has something to say.”
Ideal for readers who enjoy thoughtful Westerns, complex characters, and stories where love and justice stand against violence and prejudice.
What is the story about?
The war is over, but the battle for dignity has just begun. Lance Jacobs, a former Confederate cavalry officer and war invalid, is trying to rebuild his life in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
He owes his life to Emma Watson, a Black nurse from Brownsville, Texas. Their bond grows into love – something his neighbours, his former comrades, and the new secret riders in white hoods are not ready to accept.
⚔️From the last skirmishes of the Civil War to a fragile Reconstruction South.
💕A love story that crosses racial lines in a time of hatred and revenge.

⛪Old faith, new conscience – and the cost of standing for justice.
Lance put his cane aside and gently grasped the woman by the shoulders, leaning on her. Then he looked Emma directly in the eyes from close range. "I must confess something to you," Lance said. The man paused for a few seconds. Emma stiffened and looked at the man, waiting to hear what he would say.
"I - love - you." The cavalry lieutenant pronounced the words one by one and emphasized each one.
