What Amazon Readers Are Saying
Straight from the horse's mouth — and the readers' hearts
A Fresh, Funny, and Surprisingly Tender Western
One of those rare Western tales that manages to be adventurous, heartfelt, and laugh-out-loud funny — all at the same time. Told entirely from the perspective of Light, a proud, witty cavalry horse, the story brings the American frontier to life in a way I've never seen before. Ilpo Halo gives Light a wonderfully engaging voice — sarcastic, emotional, self-aware, and endlessly observant. From Civil War battlefields to Comanche camp life, from wild-horse herds to cabbage-pilfering mischief, Light's journey is as unpredictable as it is entertaining. The pacing is lively, the adventures varied, and the illustrations by Mervi Jakonen add charm to an already vivid world. Young readers and adults alike will find something to enjoy. 4.6 Stars
KindleHighly Recommend — Don't Pass This One Up
The premise itself is brilliant — a horse named Light tells his own story after the death of his master. Light has a choice: give up or survive. He makes the right choice and we get to hear his story straight from the horse's mouth. This book had me laughing, gasping, and even swiping away a tear. I love, love, love this book. Wonderful story — you can't go wrong with this one.
KindleA Fresh, Funny Western with an Unforgettable Narrator
A lively, heartfelt Western told from the perspective of Light — witty, opinionated, and deeply loyal. Light's voice is sarcastic, self-aware, and adds both laugh-out-loud moments and genuine tenderness, particularly in his bond with his master. The varied adventures and charming illustrations make it appealing to both young readers and adults. A creative, entertaining, and memorable take on the Western genre — full of heart and personality.
KindleA Truly Original Take on the Western Genre
Light's voice is one of profound experience. The novel beautifully articulates his journey, his feelings of loss, and his subsequent search for meaning in a vast, unforgiving world. Halo's prose is highly effective, allowing us to see the Wild West through an entirely different lens — one concerned with the immediate necessities of food, shelter, and companionship, all while processing grief. For readers looking for a Western with unique emotional depth and a gripping story about resilience, I highly recommend The Wild West Drifter Horse.

I absolutely loved this story! Light's voice is so unique — funny, brave, and full of heart. I've read a lot of animal stories, but never one that felt this real or moving.

KindleFun Story from the Horse's Mouth
The author did a great job of telling the trials and travails of a cavalry horse in the Civil War. He creatively told this story from the horse's perspective!
PaperbackDriftLight
I really liked the premise and the path through history that Light made, as well as the friends he met — especially Dolly. While some of the writing was sporadic, I often associated that with the way a skittish horse would act or think. Overall, a fun book and well worth the read. Yee-haw!
